English Write and Pass Story

Filed under: Uncategorized — by mollykroskie @ 9:05 pm

What people started writing during class:

Once upon a time there was a princess that loved a prince

so much that she made a shrine of him.

She could never find the courage to talk to him. One day she walked in on him when he was getting out of the shower.

She was very confused because he was in her shower.

She called the king into her room because she didn’t know what to do.

The king told her to make a move on the Prince.

They started doing it on the bed.

The princess found out that the prince is a frog.

How I finished the story:

Because the she did it on the bed with the prince, who was really a frog, the princess got a terrible disease all over her body.

She had warts and slime all over her body and had to be banished to the forest with Snow White.

There Snow White and the princess lived happily in solitude taking care of the Seven Dwarfs.

Commercial

Filed under: Uncategorized — by mollykroskie @ 7:31 pm

I couldn’t find a real video for a sports drink that was similar to the idea that my group had, so I went ahead and used this. We are going to make a video for a sports drink product that is supposed to make the user more athletic and attractive to people of the opposite sex. The tone obviously is supposed to be humerous and not serious at all. I think this video uses a pathos kind of argument in a funny way. Todays society is very worried about looks and performance. This video appeals to peoples ideas of wanting to make themselves better and more attractive.  In our commercial, we are going to use pathos as well to feed peoples emotional need of self improvement to get them to want to buy our “sports drink”.

Chapters 6 and 7

Filed under: Uncategorized — by mollykroskie @ 10:38 pm

Chapter 6 emphasizes the duality between drinking alcohol made from corn in the 1800s and eating food with corn by-products in the 20th century. The more corn the farmers produced, the more the government and big companies found ways to put it into products that consumers eat and drink. Corn used to have very few uses and now there are hundreds corn can be used for. One of the best uses that the companies thought of was to use corn as a sweetner. Ominovores love sweet products and corn sweetners are found in so many things that we love to eat. Wallerstien, who was on the board of directors at McDonalds, wanted to find a way to make people consume more food even though the amount of food consumed is generally fixed. He invented the idea of supersizing.

Chapter 7 goes into great detail about fast food companies, and in particular McDonalds. Michael Pollan took his family to McDonalds to eat and goes through step by step of what he and his family are eating, what is in each food item, and all the process used to get the food to where it is.

To me the idea of all the different products that go in to McDonalds food is gross. I really don’t eat fast food in the first place, but when I do I definitely regret it like Michael Pollan said at the end of the chapter. Is there ever going to be a day when people realize how much harm they are doing to their bodies by eating all these disgusting chemicals and products?

My Kitchen

As you enter through the vast arch to the kitchen, the aromatic smell of spices overwhelms yours senses. Deep burgundy and beiges are splashed across the walls. A deep inset to the left yields generous bay windows that overlook the expansive backyard. Across the room, contemporary appliances line the wall, with shiny sleek countertops seperating them.

Chapters 4 and 5

Chapter 4 basically describes how animals use corn. The animal that was mostly focused on was the cow. Chapter 4 shows how most of the cows in America are put in overcrowded, dirty areas and fed corn, which under natural cirumstances shouldn’t be in their diet. It really goes into details about how the animals are kept and all the diseases and problems that crop up because the animals are fed corn. Corn has overtaken the old fashioned farming system and instead of having a healthy, natural balance in nature, it has completely disrupted the cycle between plants and animals on farms.

Chapter 5 goes into great detail about the refining process of corn and all its uses. Every single part of corn has a different use and there isn’t any waste left over. It also shows how corn is in almost every single processed food we consume. Even meat products have corn content in them because the animals are fed so much corn.

These two chapters were really eye opening to me and in some cases I was really disgusted. The parts that go into detail about corn fed cattle and all the antibiotics really got to me. During high school, I worked at a local butcher shop and our stores beef comes from National Beef. I am pretty sure that we sold the natural beef from grass fed cows, but if not that is disgusting. All corn in everything is overwhelming. How is anyone supposed to be healthy if the industry is headed towards more processing and fake products from corn?

Chapter 2 and 3

In chapter 2, Michael Pollan goes to Iowa and meets George Naylor. Mr. Naylor is a farmer whose family has been in the farming industry for a very long time. This chapter goes through the family history of the Naylor Family and shows their progression in the United States as farmers. George Naylor is a farmer who prefers to use older farming techniques, machinery, and less genetically engineered seeds compared to many of the farmers around him. The rest of the chapter then goes on to explain the evolution of corn and farming. It shows how farmers are much more efficient than they used to be, even if their production in the corn industry defies economic logic.

Chapter 3 is then the transition chapter between 2 and 4. While chapter 2 discusses the actual farming process and ideas, chapter three goes into detail about how once the corn is harvested, it is dropped off at the elevator to be stored or relocated to a company for use. This chapter really highlights how the biggest percentage of corn is used as “corn the commodity” in contrast to “corn the food”.

Reading these chapters has helped me understand the economics of farming, especially corn farming, because in economics class in high school, I never really understood it. I really wonder why farmers still decide to farm even though it defies logic? I know that it is explained in the book by Mr. Naylor, but it still doesn’t make sense to me. You would think they would just find something else to do.

My Favorite Place in the World

Filed under: Random Thoughts — by mollykroskie @ 2:56 pm

This is my favorite place in the whole world. I visited Gettysburg in the fall of my junior year in high school and fell in love with it. The scenery in the fall and the amazing history are overwhelming. Not to mention this is where I met my boyfriend of over a year :)
